Field Experience an Integral part of the Master of Divinity Program

The Master of Divinity degree program is designed to emphasize the parish ministry. Thus, those skills that are needed for the care and discipleship of God’s people are given not only in the classroom, but also in field experience. Usually this is combined with a course taught in the classroom but sometimes the field experience is a credit that stands alone. In both cases it is important for students to work with their advisor to be sure to include these components progressively. The degree is designed to provide experience in a wide variety of field service applications that move throughout the development of the program. In each of the field experience credits students will be assigned either to a parish ministry or ministries that are extensions of the parish ministry, e.g., hospital, hospice care, personal counseling mentoring, etc.

The Master of Divinity Program - Flexible Tracks

The following chart displays the Master of Divinity required courses in a more flexible arrangement to accommodate several purposes: 1) to guide those who have an accredited MA and wish to complete additional courses to meet the requirements for the MDiv (the Seminary gives advanced standing toward the MDiv for those who already have the prerequisite courses [see below on page 26], as well as allowing credit for any additional SPTS MA-MS courses that meet the regular MDiv requirements, to further reduce the hours needed for the MDiv, hour for hour), 2) for those who have an accredited MA and need to complete an MDiv in preparation for doing the DMin (see p. 36 for DMin requirements) , 3) for those who have a BA and wish to work toward an MDiv, while completing the requirements for an MA in Ministry on the way. The Pastoral Ministry Track (column 1) and the Religious Educator Track (column 4) in the chart are exemplary for any of the seven MA in Ministry concentrations. The specialized courses for any of these seven concentrations are shown (here for the Congregational Education track) in the last cell of the "Further area requirements" row.

The Master of Arts and Master of Science Degree Programs

The Master of Arts and Master of Science degree programs require prerequisite courses from among the following, to ensure that all graduates have a familiarity with the distinctives of the Seminary.  Students who received their undergraduate degree at St. Petersburg Theological Seminary are not required to repeat these courses. Graduates from other institutions, who have similar courses on their transcripts, may be exempted from taking them if they can demonstrate that those courses were closely comparable to these.  Some of these may be exempted by examination.  However, a student may be required to take other courses to complete the required minimum number of credit hours for that degree.

Master’s Thesis, Survey Research or Basic Research Requirement:

A Master’s thesis is required for each Master of Arts and Master of  Science degree, except the Master of Arts in Ministry, for which a survey research project may be substituted for the thesis, and the Master of Arts in Counseling, for which a basic research project may be substituted for the thesis.  When the student is ready to begin the research and writing of the Master’s thesis, survey research project, or basic research project, he or she will register for the Master’s thesis writing course, TRW 6971, Thesis Writing and Research Design, which is the same for all areas of study.  However, since it generally takes more than one semester to complete the thesis or project, after the student has completed the required courses for that degree program and TRW 6971, he or she will continue to register for 1 credit hour of Master’s thesis/survey research continuation, TRW 6970, each Fall and Spring term until the thesis or project and all other requirements are completed (see pg. 18, “Continuing Matriculation Requirement”).

Minimum Total Required Hours: The minimum total number of credit hours for the degree programs varies from 36 to 45, including 3 credit hours for the thesis, but exclusive of the master’s thesis matriculation continuation credits (see previous paragraph).
